Good Bye Marshall
« on: June 03, 2011, 06:20:27 PM »

James Arness, who gave us law and order in Dodge City for twenty years as Marshall Matt Dillion, has passed over. There are few actors today who can come near the type of man he was (or at least appeared to be)

Miss Kitty, Festus, Chester, Doctor Adams and Sam are waiting, Matt. Tell'em we send our love.

I never had very many heroes but his famous character Matt Dillon was one of them. His character did what needed doing without whining or complaining. James Arness was of my father's WW11 generation, he served his country in combat, he seemed the type of man who could actually buck up to a challenge and not just another soft spoiled actor. Those of you too young to know that generation well have missed knowing some fine men and women.

I remember his TV show, Gunsmoke, well.  James Arness brought much joy to many people.

Good bye, Matt Dillon! I watched Gunsmoke a lot as a kid. No good shows on now like that.

He was also wounded in combat, Vordan...made it very hard for him to actually swing up into the saddle. He still did it, in every episode. It was what the job called for, and he believed in getting the job done.

There aren't many actors under 70 who have served in the nation's military. The actors of James Arness and John Wayne's era were very different. MANY of the top names were vets. Wayne couldn't serve, so he did propaganda films. Bob hope couldn't serve, so he helped found the USO. Those were men who cared about more than themselves, for sure.
