Magical Significance of the Number Nine?
« on: November 25, 2011, 12:59:53 PM »

I've been researching knot magic. I'm very interested in this form of magic since I tend to be a little crafty and will always have cord, thread, and fabric on hand for this type of magic.

Anyway, in all my research a number keeps coming up. Nine. Why nine? I'm having a tough time finding consistent information on it.

Heh, funny you post this as I am taking a numerology course and have been crunching numbers lately.

Here's the info I have on 9 paraphrased from what I have learned--
Number 9 represents endings/completion as it is the last number in the cycle from 1-9. As it also represents the culmination of all the learning in those cycles, it signifies tolerance, compassion, and universality.

From the Norse perspective, we're obviously lookking at the nine worlds.

Nine is also the number of points on the Valknut, the symbol of Odin and the Einherjar.

There aren't many things in spirituality with just one answer.  The complexity and diversity is part of the beauty of the Pagan path IMO.

Nine is also 3x3 a sacred power number for trinities. Nine is also the width of a sacred circle. There were nine priestesses of Freya in an old Norse account. You will find endless references to nine as a sacred number.

And from the Celtic view: they believed there were nine elements. Nine, being a multiple of three, is a sacred number.

I wish I could go back in time and ask "WHY?!" Maybe I am way too caught up in the why, eh?

Anyway thanks for the answers!

At some point, there are going to be some things you just have to take on faith.

We can come up with all sorts of reasons why something might be, but the bottom line is that sometimes it just is and we may never know the true "why" of it.  As humans, our understanding of the workings of the Universe (including math and numbers) is limited because our brains are limited.  We can notice repetitions and patterns, but the why of it may be lost on us.  Sometimes we just need to "get" that something is and move on.

For me three, seven, and thirteen are recurring numbers.  I know of a lot of reasons why these are important numbers, but knowing that doesn't affect why they come up.  I've long since given up trying to rationalize it and just "go with the flow".  ;)

For me it's 1138...but likely that's just because I'm a geek.

I do. :D  THX-1138 (done in 1971) was one of George's early movies and there was an odd reference to it in Star Wars.

The scene where Han and Luke take Chewie into the prisoner area to rescue the Princess.

Guard - Where are you taking this...thing?
Luke - Prisoner Transfer. From cell block 1138.
