Abbreviations
« on: October 09, 2011, 11:40:16 PM »

I've seen several abbreviations on several board and I just can't figure out what they mean. For example:
UPG
YMMV
UTO
OTO

If I've missed any please let me know as I am not abbreviation savvy, obviously!
Thanks!

Chat/Text speak is not allowed in most areas on these forums.  There is a fairly extensive list of acronyms used in chat rooms and text messaging here: http://www.sharpened.net/acronyms/

That's not what those are, CD. I know two of them, UPG is Unverified Personal Gnosis and OTO is Ordo Templi Orientis. They are abbreviations for things people use within the magical community online.

Thanks GW ... that explains why those two aren't in the list.  But YMMV definitely is. ;)

Ooh...I hate that list. There are many abbreviations that predate the text speaking users. RPG has been short for Role-Playing Game since they coined the phrase back in the early days of Dungeons and Dragons. 24/7 is standard usage for any place or activity that does not shut down, ETA for Estimated Time of Arrival...

I've been in forums (no longer than a couple of days) that were so strict that they jumped down my throat with both feet for calling the Central Processing Unit in a computer a CPU.

Needless to say I told them what I thought just before closing my account.
