I bought myself a granite mortar and pestle this week.
Ive been wanting one for a while, and finally gave in and got one.
It is one of the larger ones, and pretty heavy. (3 cup capacity, 5 1/2" inside diameter, 8" pestle)
So far, I have used it to grind all my resin incenses into a powder form.
It almost wasn't even work grinding them all up.
This will definitely make it much easier to measure and mix them.
After grinding, I wiped down both parts with a damp towel, to get rid of the loose powder left on them.
I then realized that some of the resins are smushed/ground/stuck to both pieces.
I did a quick internet search, and used the "dry rice grinding method" to clean them with.
This did a pretty good job of getting rid of ALMOST all of the resins.
My question is.... Is there a better/easier way to clean a mortar and pestle?
Or at least, what do you do to clean yours? (if you have one)

I just wipe them out. BUT ... I have several and never use those I have for preparing edibles for anything else. I have 2 I use for food prep, 2 for bath/body concoctions, and 1 solely for resins and herbs for spells and such.

I have a suribachi that I use for culinary herbs only. Because it has groovers I use a pastry brush to brush the particles out. It works well. I haven't had to deal with anything sticky at this point.
I think it is a must to have a dedicated incense mortar and pestle and a separate one for cooking.

Yeah, I believe I will have to buy another one when the need arises.
I think I can manage to make the sacrifice. :brew:

As inexpensive as they are, that's the best thing. Have several for dedicated purposes. At least one for edible goods only and one for non-edible purposes.

This is a fabulous idea! I haven't bought a mortar and pestle yet, because I only ever see wooden ones in stores and that seems to me like a recipe for disaster. I prefer to buy in stores rather than over the internet. I will keep looking for a granite one!

If you have a Bed, Bath and Beyond around you, I know they have some granite ones there.

Check TJ Maxx around Christmas time. I've seen a lot of granite ones and at quite good discounts.

CHristmas Tree Stores... they have stuff like that on and off all year round.

I've got one! It isn't marble (the marble one was a little too much for my budget at the moment) but it's ceramic, and did a very nice job of crushing cumin and coriander seeds for this evening's split pea soup. I like it! I was drooling over the marble one, though!
