Title: How do I practice when I live with my in-laws?
Post by: Pagan w/o Magick on August 19, 2012, 07:02:13 PM
Ok, where to begin.... I made the choice to switch beliefs in 2007 and it has been the most amazing transformation over the last 5 years. Now I'm married with 2 kids and presently living with my in-laws, who don't have a clue what being pagan is despite the fact that I've tried explaining it to them repeatedly. They don't judge or say anything rude to tear me down, but my quandry is being able to practice... Both have made it clear they don't want any of it done in their house. How do we come to a compromise so that I can still practice and they don't feel that I'm disregarding their home and rules? One other thing, I don't ever touch ouija boards, that's something that shouldn't be messed with... But how do I explain that my tarot deck isn't the same thing?

Their house their rules. I would suggest going on hikes and practicing in a quiet spot in nature, nothing fancy, no robes or such. Another thing you might check out is if the local pagan community has any public circles.

How would I go about finding other pagans? I don't know many folks around here...

I live in Longview, WA. I'm guessing about 37,000 people.

Try the magic of google, I noticed some activity for that area just in a casual glance. You are near Portland also.

Longview Washington Pagan comunity, sometimes you have to track down pagans we don't build big churches along the highway. It will be like a hunt, a bit of detective work but they seem to be there especially in Portland. Be careful contacting people, also you might use WitchVox if they are still around. The best bet is to try and find a metaphysical store, nice public place chatty clerks ect.

You could also try www.meetup.com and search through them or check on Witches Vox for circles/groups in your area.

My mother is extremely against my religion, and my in-laws are very strict Christians (but they allow me into their home and they aren't your stereotypical Christians in that regard)... so I simply don't practice or speak about religion when I'm around them... I've never lived with my in-laws other than overnight visits for a few days at a time, but when I lived with my mother, I kept my craft things (tarot decks, books, etc.) in my car and practiced outside the house (in the woods, etc.).

True, I never thought about it that way. Pagans don't exactly make it public like alot of other religions do. I am greatful for all of the help! Thank you!!

That's very true. I guess I just need to dig a little deeper and see what or whom I can find.  :D
