Title: Tylenol Recall?!
Post by: Fox on January 15, 2010, 10:55:11 AM
My mom mentioned this to me and I thought for sure it must be a hoax because I hadn't seen it on any news, but found this article on CNN.

Yep, saw it on the local news this morning.  Apparently there have been complaints from customers that a number of Johnson & Johnson products smelled "moldy".

Apparently it was also making some people mildly sick.  I was really surprised that there was NOTHING on our local news about it.  That is why my initial reaction to it was that it must be a hoax.

It's been on our news the last two or three days....

Our news is all about the football coach...It's freaking ridiculous.

It might depend on where the affected batches were sent. I know they pulled a bunch from our shelves.

McNeil issued a voluntary recall of some Tylenol products in mid-December:

That they're still having issues (and evidently have been since 2008?) is not encouraging, though it sounds like they may have identified the cause:

I'm not quite getting how something used in/on the wood of the pallets used to store/transport packaging materials can in any way, shape or form end up INSIDE the product.

If the empty bottles didn't have caps on them (manufacturers frequently ship the caps separate from the bottles) then any chemicals outgassing from the pallets could have coated the inside of the bottles.  I'm guessing that's the most likely mechanism. ;)

Even then, they should have been stored in boxes, in most cases, sealed boxes.  I wouldn't have thought that possible unless they have really crappy standards for storing their bottles.  Like that would be a shock if they did.  :rolleye:

Boxes, and even shrink wrap, are not air tight.  You'd likely be surprised at how far an aerosolized chemical can penetrate packaging.

Oh, I do know it would to some extent (recent return of a non-scented product because it smelled like lavender as evidence), but enough to actually make people sick?  What?  Are they bathing the pallets in the stuff?   :rotflmao:

No, it's just that some of those chemicals are soooo nasty that even a hint of them will make you ill.  And since most of the symptoms are gastrointestinal, I think that's entirely plausible.

That's why I use essential oils as much as possible.

People tend to keep their mouths shut around me as if anyone has an ill, I have a cure!  :D
