Do you have a 'patron' deity and if so how did this come about?
« on: October 10, 2011, 12:24:50 AM »

Just curious if anyone here has a specific or patron deity that they work with and how you came to work with him/her?

Must be some new focus, patron deities, since I've never seen anyone so interested about it before and the first posts by the 2 newest people bring it up :)

Past experience-most people just kind of fall into it at some point.

I don't know if it is so much falling into it as coming to the realization over a period of time.  I do not see myself as a hard polytheist and mostly view the Lord and Lady in generic terms.  I see specific Gods and Goddesses as archetypes representing different aspects of the Divine.

However, I have always been drawn to the Celtic Gods and Goddesses and have been "claimed" by the Morrigan.  She is often viewed as a Dark Goddess so I resisted until She smacked me around a bit and I acknowledged Her claim.  She has definitely changed my life and I am honored to serve Her.  My connection to the Lord has not been quite as strong, but that is changing - Cernunnos figures prominently in my recent experiences.

I was attracted to Lilith for quite some time and was "claimed" by her during ritual in an unmistakable manner.  :D

I had a long, meandering journey, and I've never had a "You are now mine"-type moment, but I have zero doubt that I get a little more attention from the Watcher on the Bridge than I do the other Aesir/Vanir. Of course that means the Alfather gives me a little more attention than I can handle some times too, but that's the price of doing business with the Norse.  :D Sure I've been scared enough to change pants more than once, but I've never once regretted my path.

When I was six, I remember having a dream where I was on a beach at night and I saw the Greek Earth goddess, Gaia for the first time(though I never knew it then). When I was eleven or twelve(and was attending a Christian youth group) , I met Gaia in yet another dream and it was that moment when she unmistakably claimed me. Besides, I had this feeling that the Pagan path was best for me.

A year later, the same thing happened. Only this time with the Greek nature god, Pan. And so those are two deities I follow.

Yes, Freyja.  And she picked me.  Actually she picked me YEARS before I realized it.  I'm kind of amazed she didn't smack me with a cosmic clueX4 before she did :P

Lol, not every deity needs, or even wants, a cluex4.  :rotflmao:

I was always drawn to the Greek gods, I guess its no surprise now that I had been claimed by and follow two of them.

And for whatever reason, I thought some of the Egyptian gods(namely Set, Bastet and Horus) were pretty cool too, but they never really played as big a role in my life as the Greek gods had.

Set and Bast? Those are my patrons! Horus...not so much...but I'm glad you're interested in them. I didn't feel the need to post in this thread about them since part of how I found them was through the help of people on here!

:D Bast is my other. She is the only one at the moment to have a place in my room. Statue, bowl of oil, cat shaped glass candle holder and behind her rests a cat mask from Italy a friend brought back. She looks after my fur babies.

Right now I just have a Set statue in my room next to my bed, but as soon as I can afford one I'll get a Bast statue--and then I'll get a chest binder--and then I'll get this really awesome book series that I really want to read--and then-------

:D I'm really glad to have my Set statue in my room. I haven't had a single nightmare since I got it, and it makes me feel very happy to come in and see it. I like feeling close to him.

That sounds wonderful!!  :D

You sound like me with the "and then!"  I have hope to get a Morrigan statue someday soon, and until then I find other ways to honor.

I don't know too much about Set... maybe I should do some research... hrm...

He's AWESOME--at least, that is my experience with him. I'm still learning, too, but I have some links that helped me a lot:

I also love the pictures in the first link--they are MUCH better than the way they portray him in Tutenstein...*shudder*...

Exactly! I feel very safe when I think of him. He does, after all, defend against the evil serpent that wants to destroy the Universe.

Speaking of statues, I have a statue of the greek earth deity, Gaia(My patron goddess, as I mentioned before) and I plan on getting one of Pan at some point in the future.
