Mother Earth threw a tantrum today.
« on: August 23, 2011, 03:10:31 PM »

Anyone else living on the East Coast in the US feel the aftershocks from that earthquake today? Or were you in Virginia and felt the actual quake? That was crazy, I've never experienced anything like that before. Here in PA, we feel some shaking every now and then from steel mills and the land shifting because of coal mines and caverns all over the place, but never anything like that. I thought it was pretty cool.

My bro-in-law is Navy and is at VA Beach. He said the whole hangar was shaking (he works on the planes that go on the carriers).

There was a 5.3 quake Monday centered about 180 miles south of Denver, Colorado... Can't help but wonder if they're related.

Actually I thought the vibrations came from pounding my head against the desk at work.

My dad actually thought it was our dog kicking the back of his recliner until he saw the water in his fish tank trembling. XD

They felt it in Albany, and even evacuated buildings. 6 miles north, we felt NOTHING. And we actually were affected by two. The 5.9 in Va, and a 2.2 @ 6:39 this morning about 3 miles west of Albany.....

White, your biggest problems may be in methane explosions in the old mines. I remember when I was growing up, there was one mine fire (Abandon mine) that lasted a few years. They kept an eye on it, but just let it burn. That was near Scranton

Is that Centralia? The town that's almost totally abandoned because the fires are still burning?

Don't recall the town's name. Have you ever been down in one of the mines? I went ONCE because both my grandfathers were Pennsylvania coal miners in their day. I wanted some idea what it might have been like for them. Keep in mind, I am claustrophobic. It was ...  interesting. How my grandfathers, who were both originally around 5'10", stood being in those places boogles the mind!

I've never been in a coal mine, no. I'd probably panic, lol.

If you look at the USGS US map, they appear to be near the same Latitude.

Oh, and they were about 12 hours apart.

Too far away to have any real connection. Ours goes off every so often with the last one in June of 2010.

I like my fault system. It releases the pressure as soon as it builds up instead of California's trick of grinding for decades and decades and finally violently exploding in a massive release of devastation and death.

Different mechanism.  Here in Cali we are constantly having quakes, they are just too small to notice.  Pressures are constantly being released all over the state but also building in other areas.  Problem is, no one really knows how they are all connected or how the stresses get transferred from one area to another.

I'll take a little shaking over tornadoes, oppressive humidity, or hurricanes. :raspberry:

Most people in So. Calif tend to ignore the quakes, unless they happen right under them.

Its kind of like riding a roller coaster the second or third time.
It gets your attention for a bit, then its over.

That is of course assuming one even noticed in the first place. ;)  Anything less than a 5.0 rarely gets my serious attention. :rotflmao:

On a more serious note, I have heard that quakes in the Midwest or on the East Coast are a lot different than what we experience here.  Because they don't have a lot of faults, and the faults that they do have are really old and covered with earth, smaller quakes travel farther and are more intense.  Kate Hutton (for those who aren't familiar with her, she's a seismologist at CalTech) was on the news last night and mentioned that a 5+ quake on the East Coast is (if I'm remembering correctly) more like a 6+ here.
