Title: Carpal Tunnel?
Post by: Eternal Seeker on September 01, 2009, 02:37:32 PM

My hands have been bothering me lately, and I wondered why- until I saw on my profile that I average 1,679 posts per day. That can't be healthy.

peace,
ES

Yeah, I'm averaging over 400 myself.

I was getting the same myself, so had to back off. It gradually got better, and the uncontrollable twitching in my thumb has finally subsided. I guess our hands weren't designed to be poking keys all day.

I deliberately don't keep track. Between all the sites I post on, the games I play, and the fact I run a cash register four days a week....the less I think about it, the better.

Ugh...carpal tunnel...

I once went to my doctor concerned about the pain in my wrists...he tells me, "You have mild carpal tunnel."

I ask what I can do about that and I was told, "Well...just...stop typing."

Yeah...right.  :rolleye:

If I had to stop typing, I'd lose my job and have no recreational activities :P

I developed carpal tunnel about ten years ago and have controlled it since by following the advice of a surgeon I saw.  Yes, I was ready for surgery, it was so bad.  He said that in his opinion, we could type all we like as long as we restore good circulation to the wrist at night.  His theory is that carpal tunnel requires 1) repetitive motion during the day AND 2) lack of circulation at night.  He said that too many people sleep on their hands (hands under the head or under the pillow) at night.  He gave me hard wrist guards to wear at night so that if I did put my hands under my head, the circulation would still be able to flow.  After a week of wearing the hard wrist guards, my carpal tunnel went away.  Now, when I get those first twinges I put the wrist guards on at night.  Works for me.   :groovin:

I'd never heard of that.  Even more surprising is a surgeon that was willing to give you advice that wasn't surgery.  Luck you!

I'd never heard of that.

No.  It's not common advice at all.  And it's ten year old advice, not the latest.  In the world of modern medicine, ten year old advice is almost folk medicine.  But I have shared that with many people, mostly co-workers, and it does work.

That's awesome!  Especially that you found a surgeon who wasn't so full of his "skills" that he didn't look to other options.  Thanks for the tip sis! :pounce:

I get cramps in my hands, and my thumb is stuck to the hand....it hurts like crazy. :gaah:
So I just rub it until its back to normal.
When I say stuck its like something I have never seen....only on people who are disabled.......and NO I have never had it checked out yet. I have to many other things going on....my back and ribs, and knee.

That is enough for right now!
