Pagan Music?
« on: May 19, 2012, 03:36:32 PM »

I saw we had a spot for TV and Movies, but no music, so I put it here... hope that's okay!

What good pagan bands have you found (beyond meditation/drumming/etc... I'm talking actual bands)? I love Inkubus Sukubus... and I have a few metal bands that I enjoy (Devildriver and Eluvietie are two of my favs!), but beyond that, I'm having a hard time finding pagan music.

My musical taste ranges from classical to heavy metal and everything in between, but I'm mostly a metal/rock fan. Anyone know of any good bands out there to check out?

GW and I are friends with a local tribal Celtic band called Tuatha Dea.  http://www.reverbnation.com/artist/artist_songs/763738  They play a lot of Pagan festivals although their music is not purely Pagan.

As for pure Pagan, I like SJ Tucker and Spiral Rhythms a lot.

I'll run through my usual list:

Tyr -
Nice metal riffs with awesome harmony when they do what I refer to as their "hall" songs (i.e. - it sounds like a bunch of vikings singing drinking songs in a hall). A lot of songs are in their native Faroese, as they're from the Faroe Islands, a group of islands halfway between Scotland and Denmark. They're a bit on the angry, anti-Christian side (see the Hammer song), but there's not a lot of it so you can skip over it if it bothers you.
TYR - Sinklars Visa A "hall" song.
TYR - Hold the Heathen Hammer High
TYR - Tegin Smidur

Turisas -
Copy-pasting a review from The Wild Hunt, since this reviewer sums them up perfectly.

Quote
Though I went to Paganfest for Arkona, Turisas stole the show. I jumped up and down for the entirety of their set. Which is saying something, since jumping is not in any way an activity I am compelled to. Looking like something that stepped out of a Mad Max movie, Turisas delivered a sonic assault that was relentless and powerful, yet also melodic, sophisticated, and thoroughly engaging. These lads are here to be bad-ass, make no mistake – they describe their music as Battle Metal. And indeed their songs are tailored to rally the berserker in us all. Their front man (Mathias Nygard) is grandiose and over-the-top, yet somehow doesn’t come across as pretentious, and their lead instrumentalist (Ollie Vanska) is one of the best violinists I’ve heard. Like so many great metal bands, Turisas hails from Finland.

I've posted these guys in PJ at least three other times, and I know the regulars are getting sick if it  :rotflmao:, but I LOVE these guys!
Turisas - Sahti Waari
Turisas - The March of the Varangian Guard
Turisas - Stand Up and Fight

And lastly (for now), if you want to slow it down a bit, check out Faun. They're a German folk band, with nice instrumentals and a haunting female vocal lead.

Faun - Tinta
Faun - Von den Eiben
Faun - Egil Saga

Definate Pagan slant? Lorrenna McKinnett, Within Temptation, and if you can find the older stuff: Gwydion.

I will check those out. I saw Within Temptation last year at Mayhem Festival... they were pretty good, but I haven't listened to much of their stuff since then.

The Quickening by Spiral Dance has to be the best pagan dance music ever written. I kid you not.

Been listening to Eluveite all day.  They are a folk metal band - love the flutes, pan pipes and violin.

Synaulia is a good Roman group. Some of their music has been on the HBO series Rome as well as Gladiator and Spartacus.
