Who's cooking?
« on: November 23, 2010, 06:02:58 PM »

I'm getting ready to start my Thanksgiving cooking marathon and thought I would see  what ya'll are cooking up.

Our menu will be:
Roasted Turkey with Gravy
Cornbread Dressing (Mom makes this)
Whole Wheat Pan Rolls
Loaded Mashed Potatoes
Baked Sweet Potatoes with Cinnamon Brown Sugar Butter
Steamed Asparagus with optional cheese sauce
Steamed Sugar Snap Peas
Steamed Carrots with Honey Cilantro Glaze
Steamed Corn
Baked Macaroni and Cheese (the only casserole this year)
Greek Pasta Salad
Tomato Mozzarella Salad
Deviled Eggs
Meat, Olive and Cheese plate for snacking

Desserts:
Pumpkin Pies
Apple Pies
Mandarin Orange Pie
Chocolate Raspberry Yogurt Pie (I am creating a recipe for this one)

I dunno if my family will bring other stuff or not but I think this should be plenty...

Have you ever tried using maple syrup instead of brown sugar in the sweet potatoes? Glorius!

My mom is doing the cooking again this year, but our menu stays pretty much the same by demand.

Turkey
Mashed Potatoes and Gravy
Homemade Dumpling Style Noodles (an absolute must have in my family, almost more so than the Turkey)
Candied Sweet Potatoes
Home Grown Corn
Green Been Casserole
Sage Dressing/Stuffing
Homemade Rolls
(Yeah, it is a giant starch fest, but that's the way we like it.  :D )

I think she is also fixing a pecan pie, blackberry cobbler and a dutch apple pie, but I'm not certain she has decided for certain on all of those.

Oh, wait...

I am cooking on Friday when Hubby's family comes over for football watching.   It will mostly be finger foods.

Crab Dip
Homemade Chex Mix
Pigs in a Blanket (little smoky style)
Bacon Wrapped BBQ Smokies
Meat, Cheese and Cracker Platter
Chili Cheese Dip and Chips

I still haven't decided on what or if I'm going to be fixing a dessert.  Coming off of everything the day before, I'm not sure I'll be much in the mood for anything else.

I'm doing the turkey, mashed potatoes and stuffing and mom is bringing the brussells sprout salad (cringe not, it is delicious!), sweet potatoes (we make them with a peppery nut topping) and pumpkin pie. We usually also have green beans but I haven't found fresh enough ones, so we'll have a salad of baby greens, pomegranate seeds and Fuyu persimmon instead. And the kids will make cranberry bread. Oh yeah, we're gonna be stuffed to the gills.

DS, that mandarin orange pie sounds very interesting. Can you post the recipe?

Fox, the dumpling style noodles have me intrigued. Is that similar to German spaetzle?  We love our spaetzle in my family, but I don't know why we never considered having it for Thanksgiving.

EM, this is my recipe for them...  http://www.paganjourneys.com/index.php?topic=117.0

They are really just a thicker style egg noodle that was made on both sides of my family.  I didn't realize that it wasn't standard Thanksgiving fare until I met my first husband and his mom looked at me like I'd lost all my marbles the first year when I asked if she'd already had her noodles made up.  :rotflmao:

We don't do noodles down here. First I've heard of it.

My mom is half Italian and they always had ravioli in addition to the turkey and other fixin's. Actually ravioli would be the standard addition to any holiday meal.

I just found a recipe for Goetze's Caramel Cream Apple Cake, which I may have to try (WTH is a "tube pan"?). Okay, so it's really just an excuse to buy some caramel creams, but hey...

Yup!  You can also use a bundt pan.  The main purpose is that you have that center pan piece coming up through the middle so that the cake bakes evenly all the way around and in the middle.

I don't have to do a darn thing!  Going to the Inlaws house and we always bring home a ton of left overs.  The menu over there is always the same:

Turkey
Cornbread Stuffing
Cranberry sauce
Mashed taters and gravy
Sweet potatos with marshmellows
Green Bean casserole
Cheesy potato casserole
Ambrosia Salad
Roles
Pumpkin Pie

It's going to be the three of us. So here is our meal:

Pork Chops
Mashed potatoes
Cheese Grits
Crescent Rolls
Peas and Onions
Green beans
Chocolate chip cookies

Not traditional, but oh well.

Going to my extended family's Thanksgiving and I'm bringing the sweet potatoes (my fave -- withy brown sugar and marshmallows) and pumpkin pies.  Yum!  What a great holiday.   :D

We have turkey thighs and wings baking, (a whole bird is too much for two people, and we prefer dark meat), with dressing, cranberry sauce, acorn squash, asparagrass, and gravy. Instead of fattening desserts, we're going with liquors and cheese into the wee small hours, perhaps served off of body parts. And I'll be making biscuits and gravy for Friday morning.
