Mongo brought up some important points, which reminded me of one I would like to add: Read the TOS of every site you post to! There are sites that clearly state in their TOS that by posting there, you grant them copywrite of what you posted. In other words, if you post your story there, you no longer own it- they do! Don't patronise sites with this policy!
