Yeah... Hubs and I basically tore that apart. THAT is why he was writing up HIS list and I ended up working on mine. Some of those books are just NOT what you want  the clueless reading in the beginning...like Buckland.

I was disappointed The Spiral Dance was all the way at the end of the list

For what my $0.02 is worth, I guess from a beginner's point of view, most of them are valid.  I haven't read "Uncle Bucky's Big Blue Book of stuff" (as a friend of mine calls it) although I do own it, just haven't had the time to sit down and read it yet.

I'm never going to discount a book because I disagree with it - I've always said you can always take and learn something from a book, even if it's what not to do!  I do think there might be other more important or comprehensive texts (most of the ones listed I've never heard of, let alone read) that are more worthy of being in the list.  However, this is a list collated based on votes from the Pagan community, yes?

I tend to think this is a list of "essential" texts and are in no particular order?

We just aren't sure of what Pagan Community, Tahlea. The questionair apparently was sent out in the UK, but even many of that crew cringed at the resulting list, and even the man who sent it out and tabulated most of it says the editor made his own final choices. As for the ones I don't think are much good, including Uncle Bucky's....yeah, IF YOU HAVE A CLUE, you can get something out of the lousiest book. (The other nickname for that book, BTW, is Uncle Bucky's Big Blue Book of BS) in some cases, like Buckland and $ilverraven Wolf, it's because of the writers. Buckland is a drunk and a self-admitted BSer (don't get my hubs going on that one.) "Momma $ilver" doesn't even have as much ethics as Bucky. "To Ride a Silver Broomstick" wasn't too  bad for newbies, but she went downhill from there FAST

That's what I said, but the censorship on this site is appalling :P  We're all adults here (well, most of us) - can't even put in the word "bulls#!t"?!

Consider it an exercise in vocabulary building.

I'm curious about the Buckland book's reputation. Is there actually erroneous stuff in there or is the negativity all based on the personality of Buckland himself and his branching off from Gardnerian Wicca? I remember reading the book a few years ago based on recommendations from folks on Wicca Forums but didn't connect with it all that much probably because it was very heavy into the ceremonial ritual stuff. I hardly remember what was in it any more except that they liked to show themselves working skyclad and awful lot.

Most of it is a rip off of traditions (Gardenerian and Alexandrian) that Buckland has no proof of being trained in. That said, there are some accurate parts to it. I just hate seeing a hypocrite make money off of anything.
