Title: Friday the 13th
Post by: Wunjo on August 14, 2010, 08:55:58 AM
Ok, yesterday was Friday the 13th....who is superstitious and did or what happened to you?

I am a tiny bit superstitious......but yesterday the worst thing that happened to me was I hit my toe on a table quite hard & almost fell on a couple of throw rugs.
Other than that I faired ok. (Knock on wood)......

So lets hear what happened to you.

Nothing happened to me... thing went probably better than usual with the computer. Both daughters got big cuts (one stubbed her toe and the other was scratched by a cat) first thing in the morning though when they realized it was Friday the 13th.

Nothing really happened to me.  I just can't really see any Friday being unlucky.  Monday, on the other hand...

Friday is Freya's day, it couldn't possibly be unlucky.  :D

Why should we be afraid of Friday the 13th? Just because the Knights Templar were arrested in France on Friday the 13th of November, 1307, people have feared the 13th when it falls on a Friday ever since. It's silly.

I had a great day.  I do well when Mercury is in retrograde too, though.  I think I may be contrary.   :D

Thanks GW ... I get so frustrated when people start talking about Friday the 13th being unlucky.  :brickwall:  I don't get why anyone would buy into something likely started by the Catholic church in yet one more attempt to "frighten" people into turning their backs on the "old ways".

In addition to the incident GW mentioned, one can find any number of articles speculating on why Friday the 13th has been deemed  “unlucky” and some make more sense than others.  Friday the 13th has been vilified by the Western culture because of the associations with women.  Friday is Freya's day (the only day named after a goddess btw) ... thirteen is the number of full moons in a calendar year, and the number of menstrual  cycles every woman has each year ... seeing a pattern?

If you choose to see any day as "unlucky", you will likely have a bad or unlucky day.  I choose to see Friday the 13th as a great day, luckier than most days, and I have never had anything "bad" happen on those days, yesterday included. ;)

I totally agree with CD.  I do not see Friday the 13th as a "bad luck" day at all.  My MIL was born on Friday the 13th.  Yesterday was really a wonderful day all around.  Had an awesome time with the kids and some of their friends and hubby made it through yet another layoff.  I'd have to say that was a pretty awesomely lucky day by any count.

I had to work; does that count?

I am one of those people who have no trouble with the number 13. In college, there were 13 students in my one lab: myself and 12 guys. What's unlucky about that, I ask you?

You also asked about whether or not folks were superstitious ... how is a simple explanation of why we don't buy into superstition not in keeping with the original request?  Just because someone doesn't respond exactly like you want them to doesn't mean they shouldn't post. ;)

I just never expected this to turn into a History lesson, that is all.

I thought it would be kept on the LIGHT side....and we all could have a bit of FUN.

Even though NO HARM was done.

My favorite numbers are 7--11--& 13. So I do not fear the 13th either.

"(the only day named after a goddess btw)"

I'm not so sure... Monday is named for the Moon, and in many cultures the Moon is a Goddess. Then there's Saturnsday... yeah, I know Saturn's supposed to be a God, but look at those gaudy colors and wearing all those rings? That's a diety who's very comfortable with showing his feminine side, to say the least...

peace,
ES

Oh yeah, Saturn as a deity is at least feeling a little Fabulous!

But as for the 13th? Nothing exciting happened at work which is always a good thing, it was the start of my vacation which is an even better thing. The friends I was house sitting for came back from the Pennsic Wars with some really nice fabric and some really spiffy trim for me and my wife. They also out of the blue paid me $100 which covered the cost of the new tent that I had to buy.

About the only "Bad" thing that happened to me was my fault and was a conscious decision of mine. I stayed up 36 hours to get my sleep schedule on a day cycle so I could enjoy my vacation. This meant that by 10pm I was a little loopy...but that's not the fault of the day.

Actually I am having fun with this topic. I love learning the origins of things whether they be mundane or mythical or magical.

And when is history not fun? Sure in schools they can teach it in a way that is totally dry and boring, but history properly done is fascinating. The origin of the Easter Bunny and why it is hand in hand with a Christian Holiday. All the traditions of Christmas that are really Pagan. I love it. Any day I go home with a little more knowledge stored in the brain-pan is a good day.

<blink><blink> Huh? I know it's 05:30 hours EDT and I'm a little sleep deprived thanks to the sleep schedule change...but did Mongo miss something?

My mother was born on Friday the 13th.

All your proof is of now invalid.

...it's a joke, but based quite on the truth :/

It is all due to the different timezones of the world.
Everyone knows the real problem is Saturday the 14th!

My work computer was down when I went in yesterday, then the internet and phones went down at work. But I got to leave early, that's a win. So all in all not a bad day.

I always thought of Friday the 13th as a lucky day, the myth that the number 13 is unlucky I understand was made up to discourage pagan ways.  So needless to say, nothing out of the ordinary happened to me, and I find this day like every other day, if not maybe even a bit luckier.  Oh yeah I am not entirely sure about the myth debunk, so don't quote me on it.
