Title: wicca on TV
Post by: earthmuffin on November 30, 2009, 06:03:36 PM
Lisa Simpson got initiated into a coven last night on the Simpsons. Did anyone else see it?

yeah, I saw it, and I thought they did it fairly well. But then, Groening is a Unitarian, so you'd kind of expect that.

peace,

I don't watch the Simpsons, but it is good to hear that someone can shine a positive light our way.  :D

I saw it too ... mostly positive.  But Lilith?  Come on ...

I thought Lilith was an inspired choice. The only people who would be offended by taking Lilith's name in vain are female singer/songwriters; using Hecate or Diana would have given genuine offense to some.

Fox, it was the Simpson's so it was tongue in cheek, of course. The only part that slightly offended me was the description of people find Wicca (three bad marriages, failed business attempt... can't remember the rest of it). I laugh like crazy at all the Christian jabs with Flanders and the Reverend though, so I guess it was Wicca's turn to be lampooned. Since Lisa is the only almost sane one on the show, I consider it a compliment that she was the one who would join.

Very true ES.  It was pretty funny.  I cracked up with Flanders' comment about Buddhism leading to witchcraft, and Lisa's comment about not jumping into something without doing research first.

The only part that slightly offended me was the description of people find Wicca (three bad marriages, failed business attempt... can't remember the rest of it).

I think you mean Bart's comments?  "No, no, you're too young to be a witch.  Savor the steps leading up to it.  College anorexic, a string of bad marriages, career disappointment, failed pottery shop.  And then, when you're old and alone, you can hit the witch thing hard!"  (yeah, I DVR'd it :rolleye: )

BTW, did you catch the episode title?  Rednecks and Broomsticks. :rotflmao:

Yeahh but it was Bart that was making those comments, and Bart is hardly the most informed character either and he'd be one of the 'stereotyping' ones.

I thought it was cute.  And Lisa ended up pretty similar to me.  First Buddhism, then neo Paganism.

Let us leave in a manner most wiccan!

Huh?

Text your mom to pick us up.

I almost peed myself laughing.
