Several prisons, actually, including the Women's prison. As a member of the Indianapolis Pagan Prison Ministry. For a number of months now I've been leading classes in two prisons- 3 groups, totaling 136 members and growing. It's very rewarding work- they need so much, are provided with so little, and receive no help from the state. And these are serious seekers, trying to turn their lives around.
I recommend any of you have feel the call to public service look to the prisons first- it may be the most benefit from the effort you will ever see.

P.S. A funny story from Litha, at the women's prison. The IPPM leader, Colleen, was passing out scripts for the ritual, calling for volunteers. I said, "Dibs on High Priest". Hilarity ensued.

Wow! You seem like you must be a really good person since you're doing so much to help the people in prison turn their lives around. I would like to find some kind of pagan volunteer opportunities in my area, but it's hard since I'm in Tennessee--the buckle of the Bible Belt. I'm glad you get to help them.

My intent wasn't to blow my own horn- I think I told Fox once that it's difficult to pontificate while blushing- my intent was twofold: 1. Having had my eyes opened to how much they need, and how little they get, I thought I'd plant a little seed in everyone's subconscious, so when they're thinking of charitable things to do or give to, they'd think of them. We, as a nation, spend more time and money educating and doing missionary work for people on the other side of the world than we do for the people who are going to be turned back out onto the streets in a couple years with no more idea how to cope with life than they had when they went in. 2. To help us remember that one of the things about being an Earth based religion is recognizing that we ought to do something for each other while we're still here on Earth!

GW and I are in Tennessee too. Actually, there is a prison ministry in East Tennessee and many other opportunities to help those less fortunate. The organization I work with is doing a prison book drive right now as a matter of fact.

Cool! Do you know of any websites for those organizations? I would love to help. Also, do those organizations allow minors to join? (I'm seventeen)

You would not be allowed to go inside as a minor, but there's LOTS of other things that can be done. Collect used Pagan books for the prisoners- the state will not, with a capital not, buy Pagan books for them. They'll buy Bibles and Korans, but no Buckland or Cunningham! If you find an organization, man a table at Pagan Pride affairs- at our own PPDay here in Indy, people read our brochures, and then went to the used book dealers, bought books, and brought them right back to us! We were really moved by that gesture.

@ diniesaur. There are some teen groups but they would require parental consent to attend. One of them is making treasure boxes for Children's Hospital. Donating books would be great as ES said. The prisoners need more Pagan reading material. The state won't buy it but they will allow it to come in through the ministry. Private Message me about where you are located and I will see if there are any groups where you are.
