Former Southern Baptist here.  I see animals reloading into a boat 2 x 2.

A large, hard-hided animal with a large horn sticking out of its nose... and a kid who would be mercilessly teased through school for having such an unusual name.

But growing up with a last name that was rife for teasing, maybe I'm just overly sensitive to that. Our parents resisted the urge to name us anything "cutesy", knowing that we would get enough hassle growing up because of our last name...

I see a boy who would be teased unmercifully.

If you want something diferent, look into mythology, or way back in the family trees. That's where DD's name came from....my grandfather's aunt, and my mother's grandmother. If we had another girl, she'd have been given the Welsh name for "Great Queen".

I wonder about the teasing... there are so many interesting names and interestingly spelled names out there these days... or maybe most of them are in California? I tried going with traditional names and traditional spellings and still everyone seems to spell my kids' names wrong. :gaah:

Both my hubby and I have relatively normal names and we both get them spelled wrong often.  I can sort of understand mine, as there are a couple of variants, but my hubby?  I've never seen it intentionally spelled any way other than how he spells it.   :rolleye:

No matter what you name your children, unless it is Bob, it is probably going to get spelled wrong at some point.

 :D

I see a girl with long dark hair and soft dark eyes and a positive attitude.

The reason for this? Erm...I'm a dork. I play Final Fantasy. Except her name is spelled, "Rinoa."

Truthfully though I think it's a beautiful name.

Short form of Elenore, a variant of Eleanora (light, torch, bright).

I didn't even know it came from final fantasy or that it even existed.  I was somewhere online and I happened to see the name, I can't even recall where now.

Hmm.. I'm not one to name a child a common name in fear of being teased.  I have a fairly simple name, I was teased for my last name and looks cause they couldn't tease me about my first name.  It's a cruel world, and I think that it's just something you gotta toughen up and keep your chin up.  It's a hard lesson, but one that I think all children go thru at some point in their life.

It is a cruel world and if we wanna consider the fact that kids get teased a lot for different reasons, I'm wondering if the trend of celebrities using (absurdly) different names for their children might hinder the teasing of children and names for the future...

It's not like you're naming your child Lemongrass, Paper Towel Roll, Rapunzel, Paprika or Carpet Cleaner. Rinoa or Rinoah, and I don't say this because I make the association to a video game saga, is a lovely, real name. My first name is Amanda, nice, normal and hey kids can make fun of that name too.

Rinoah sound like a name for a interesting person. If a kid doesn't like their name they will often come up with another nickname to solve the problem. I think the most important thing that a child wants is a name that sounds like the name of someone who is loved.

Beautifully put.
